Vermiculite is a micaceous mineral that expands when heated in a process known as exfoliation. Chemically, it is a hydrous magnesium iron aluminum silicate with a laminar (layered) structure similar to mica. Naturally, it is found in association with feldspar, quartz, corundum, and garnet, most often within intrusive pegmatite veins that can extend up to 100 feet.
Its unique exfoliation property makes vermiculite commercially valuable, especially for thermal and acoustic insulation as well as soil conditioning. According to Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) data, significant vermiculite deposits exist in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.
Vermiculite is generally soft, pliable, and opaque, with a dull appearance in its raw form.
The vermiculite sourced from our Mysore mines appears similar to mica, with broad glistening crystals or shining flakes in brown or greenish-yellow hues. Particle thickness can vary from 50 mm down to thin flakes.
Key Properties:
● Good thermal insulation
● Excellent sound absorption
● High melting point
● Non-combustible and compressible
● Lightweight and soil-conditioning capability
● Pliable and durable structure
When raw vermiculite is heated between 400°C to 1000°C in our modern processing plant, it expands up to 20 times its original volume, forming a lightweight, fire-resistant, and chemically inert product. Exfoliated vermiculite has a golden to bronze sheen with a reflective surface ideal for heat insulation.
Physical Highlights:
● One tonne covers 4000 sq. ft. at 1-inch depth
● Lustrous and reflective finish
● Highly porous and absorbent
Advantages:
● Lightweight and free-flowing
● Non-corrosive and non-toxic
● Odourless and asbestos-free
● Acid-resistant, chemically inert, and non-abrasive
● Reflective and non-conductor of electricity
● Vermin, termite, moth, and rodent proof
● Insoluble in water and organic solvents
● High hygroscopicity (retains moisture)
● Low thermal conductivity and heat penetration resistance
● High fire and thermal insulation capacity
